Riding the Waves of Healing: An Epic Interview with Kris Primacio, CEO of ISTO (International Surf Therapy Organization)
In the world of surf therapy, the transformative power of the ocean and the surfboard is undeniable. EpicSurf had the privilege of sitting down with Kris Primacio, the CEO of International Surf Therapy Organization (ISTO), to dive into her personal and professional journey, the essence of surf therapy, and how technologies like EpicSurf are reshaping mental and physical health.
An Epic Start
Kris’s journey with surfing began at the age of 41, a late start by some surf standards. However, her passion for the waves quickly intertwined with her lifelong commitment to volunteering. Having spent years working with numerous organizations such as Special Olympics and Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kris’s dedication to giving back seamlessly transitioned into the realm of surf therapy.
“I had just gotten back from volunteering at an orphanage in Africa when friends suggested I get involved with a local surf therapy program in Los Angeles. Despite being a new surfer, I was drawn to the idea and decided to give it a try,” Kris recalls. This decision marked the beginning of a profound journey that would not only impact her life but also the lives of countless others.
The Heart of Surf Therapy
At its core, surf therapy is more than just catching waves. It’s about intentional, inclusive, and evidence-based therapeutic programs designed to promote psychological, physical, and psychosocial well-being. “Surf therapy programs create safe spaces and a sense of community, especially for underserved and underrepresented populations,” Kris explains.
For many, the ocean is a place of refuge, and surfing provides a unique form of therapy that traditional methods cannot replicate. “The universal language of Stoke is real. Whether in Portugal or Los Angeles, the joy and connection people experience through surfing transcend language barriers,” Kris emphasizes.
The Healing Power of the Ocean
The benefits of surf therapy are vast and well-documented. From increasing self-efficacy to improving emotional regulation, the impact on participants is profound. “We’ve seen children who were non-verbal start speaking after a day of surf therapy, and veterans struggling with PTSD find new hope in the waves,” Kris shares.
Surf therapy also offers physical benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness and better sleep. “It’s about replacing the couch with a surfboard. For those battling depression and anxiety, getting out on the water can be life-changing,” Kris notes.
The Role of EpicSurf in Surf Therapy
EpicSurf’s deep-water stationary waves are revolutionizing the accessibility and inclusivity of surf therapy. “Wave pools and surf parks can serve as health and wellness centers. They create more opportunities for surf therapy, especially for those who might not have access to the ocean,” Kris explains.
The inclusion of diverse populations is a key aspect of EpicSurf’s mission. By providing a controlled and accessible environment, EpicSurf is helping to break down barriers and bring the therapeutic benefits of surfing to a wider audience.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Surf Therapy
As ISTO continues to grow, Kris envisions a future where surf therapy is more widely available and recognized as a legitimate form of mental health treatment. “Our mission is to support the growth of surf therapy so more people in need can access safe, inclusive, and evidence-based programs,” she states.
A significant part of this vision involves gaining support from healthcare institutions, insurance agencies, and government bodies. “While our services are free for participants, they are not free to deliver. More funding and institutional support would allow us to expand and reach even more individuals in need,” Kris highlights.
Kris’s journey from a new surfer to the CEO of ISTO is a testament to the transformative power of surf therapy. Through her leadership, ISTO is making waves in the world of mental health, one surfboard at a time. As technologies like EpicSurf continue to promote inclusivity and accessibility, the future of surf therapy looks brighter than ever.
