Supporting Mental Health Through the Power of Surfing

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of mental well-being and the many innovative ways people are finding healing and support. One approach growing in popularity around the world is surf therapy, which uses the power of the surfing experience to support emotional, cognitive, and physical health.

At EpicSurf, we proudly support the surf therapy movement by offering an authentic, customizable surf wave that makes real surfing accessible to people of all abilities, regardless of their location or any other physical barriers. Whether someone is learning to surf for the first time, honing in on the sport, or simply seeking the mental and physical benefits of being on a board, EpicSurf creates opportunities to connect and heal.

What is Surf Therapy?

Surf therapy is a powerful, sensory-rich activity that helps reduce emotional distress, ease symptoms of anxiety or depression, and promote resilience. Many surf therapy programs are designed to support individuals living with:

  • PTSD and trauma
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Substance use disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • ADHD
  • Physical disabilities

According to Kris Primacio, CEO of the International Surf Therapy Organization (ISTO), the results can be life-changing.

“We’ve seen children who were non-verbal start speaking after a day of surf therapy, and veterans struggling with PTSD find new hope in the waves.”

Research continues to show that surfing provides numerous mental health benefits. It can reduce symptoms of depression, improve sleep, increase feelings of confidence, and even enhance social connection.

“It’s about replacing the couch with a surfboard,” says Primacio. “For those battling depression and anxiety, getting out on the water can be life-changing.”

The Physical Benefits of Surfing

Beyond the emotional and mental benefits, surfing also supports physical well-being. Surfing improves cardiovascular health, builds strength and coordination, and promotes better sleep. It encourages movement, mindfulness, and presence, which are all key components of overall wellness.

Expanding Access to Surfing Through Inland Surf Technology

Historically, surf therapy programs have been limited to coastal regions. But inland surf technology, like EpicSurf, is changing that. By bringing real surfing to urban and landlocked communities, we are helping more people access the unique benefits of being on a wave.

At EpicSurf, we are committed to inclusive and adaptive surfing. Our wave has welcomed novice surfers, professionals, children, seniors over 70, veterans, blind surfers, and neurodiverse riders. As a Certified Autism Resource by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), we are proud to offer a surf experience designed for all abilities.

Join the Wave

Whether the goal is to master a new skill or simply enjoy the experience, surfing can have a powerful impact on mental health. As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, EpicSurf stands in support of surf therapy advocates, organizations, and individuals who are using surfing as a tool for healing.
